Projects Abroad

Dr Peter Slowe, Founder of Projects Abroad

In the early 1990s, some students wanted a break from study - a "gap year," although the term wasn't yet in common use. They approached their geography professor about traveling and working in Eastern Europe. The professor, Dr. Peter Slowe, had difficulty finding any opportunities for this kind of travel combined with work experience, so he set about arranging for his students to go and teach English in Romania where he knew some fellow academics. This was how Projects Abroad began in 1992.
Projects Abroad today

Volunteer for Peace

Our projects provide intercultural education through community service. We offer placement in over 3000 IVS projects in more than 100 countries each year, including over 40 in the USA. At each project, volunteers from diverse backgrounds, typically from four or more countries, work and live together like a family. The sharing of everyday life, both with the local community and among the international volunteers, is an integral part of the learning and serving experience.

United Planet

As an international non-profit organization, United Planet (UP) strives to create a world in which all people understand, respect, and support one another. United Planet's global network of leaders and volunteers fosters cross-cultural understanding and addresses shared challenges to unite the world in a community beyond borders.

Students Partnership Worldwide

SPW is the global leader in engaging and supporting young people to address the urgent health, education, and environmental issues in their lives. SPW’s youth-led programmes reach more than 400,000 young people every week and are cited as an example of best practice by UNICEF, UNAIDS, and the World Bank for their unique methodology.

Pueblo Ingles:

How do you fancy taking part in a fun-filled program in Spain, meeting teens from all over the world and more importantly without your parents lurking in the background?

We host you for the entire week for free! All you have to pay for is your flight and we take care of the rest!

Global Vision

There are now a large number of volunteer travel organizations that offer a variety of options for volunteer travel, so it is worth doing your research to ensure you go on a volunteer vacation with a volunteer organization that provides the best for their volunteers and the host countries in which they operate. Being one of the first volunteer travel organizations, GVI is proud of what we have achieved and how we do it, so have a look below to find out more about us.
